Звіт. Отчет. Report.(2) – №6

Energy is the ability to do work and can be converted from one form to another. There are various types, for instance, electrical, nuclear, kinetic, thermal, chemical and others. Coal and natural gas have chemical energy and the flowing water of dams or rivers have kinetic energy, which can be converted to electrical energy.
People need the energy to drive a car, run a factory, or charge a phone, almost everything requires energy. Types and sources of energy can be grouped into general categories such as primary and secondary, renewable and nonrenewable, and fossil fuels. Primary energy sources include fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal), nuclear energy, and renewable sources of energy. A secondary energy source, generated (produced) from primary energy sources, is electricity.
Each area has its energy consumption statistic, and this report is focused on the USA. The purpose of this report is to present research on energy sources and their consumption in the USA in 2019.

The United States is the world’s largest consumer of energy in general and of oil and refined products.
This report shows the changes since 1950 and explains how the USA uses energy. It is based on trusted sources and official statistics.
In 2019, U.S. total primary energy consumption was about 100 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu). U.S. total primary energy use was about 17% of the total world primary energy consumption of about 604 quadrillions Btu(580 million terajoules) in 2019.

Sampling protocol:
To collect reliable sample information this research was divided into two parts: sources of energy in the USA and its consumption in the USA. The basement was the graphs below.

Analysis and Results:
Energy sources are measured in different physical units: liquid fuels in barrels or gallons, natural gas in cubic feet, coal in short tons, and electricity in kilowatts and kilowatt-hours. The United States uses British thermal units (Btu), which means a measure of heat energy.
The vast new supplies of oil and natural gas coming from domestic shale are radically altering our outlook for eventual self-sustainability
Alternative energy sources will continue to grow as long as economically feasible, especially if government subsidies are available to support their production.

This graph shows the rapid increase of petroleum, renewable and nuclear energy consumption that grew more than twice since 1950. The reason for this augmentation is the development, and expansion of humanity, as more factories, machines, transport, and the alike require more energy. During this period, natural gas and coal have had stable characteristics.

The sources of energy used by each sector vary widely:

  • Transportation (28%) and industry (26%) together consumed the most of the energy, where petroleum and natural gas were the main sources.
  • Residential and Commercial consumed about 20% (from which 87% of energy was from natural gas and renewable energy).
  • Electric Power (37%) received a per cent from petroleum, 38.4% from natural gas, 23.5% from coal, 17.5% from renewable energy and the rest from nuclear electric power.

    Sources analyze:

    • Petroleum and natural gas are the biggest sources of energy in the USA in 2019 (69%) which consists of 68.8 quadrillions Btu from 100.2 the total amount.
    • Coal and renewable energy (mainly from hydroelectric dams and biomass; the rest from renewable sources like wind, geothermal, and solar) had 22%.
    • Nuclear Electric Power - 8%.(strictly used for electric power generation)
