The monolever suspension system was introduced in 1980 by BMW on its R80GS big dirt bike (see Figure 5-19). This style of rear suspension houses a shaft drive within the monolever geared to the rear wheel, eliminating the need for chains and belts. A single shock/strut unit is mounted to one side of the bike rather than in the center, as with other monoshock suspensions. The tension or loading of the shock is normally adjustable if needed.
