The third sort of assignment I ask you to complete is a final analytical essay. This is your opportunity to demonstrate how well you can identify, discuss and analyze how the ideas and problems introduced by various authors intersect with eachother. For this purpose, you are asked to choose a single author (Bacon, Descartes, Anonymous, Rousseau, Kant), and another (Merchant, Mokyr, Conrad, Raj, Meiksins-Wood), and critically analyze the common and conflicting points between them so as to eventually demonstrate a greater understanding of the enlightenment and scientific revolution as such. You will notice that the authors from this course’s first half might be considered the authors of primary texts, the authors from the second half the authors of secondary texts. This is by design – for just as these latter authors sought to understand the enlightenment and scientific revolution after the fact, so too must you try to do the same in the light of their efforts
